Has she grown out of her skates?

How to quickly tell if your child has grown out of his/her Skates? Applies to all Boot brands.

We’ve been wanting to talk about this for a while. We often have parents who don’t realize their child’s Skates are too small until foot issues develop. On the other hand, there are children who will complain their Skates are too small when they are actually not.

For growing children, we usually give 1cm room for growth when suggesting a size. This allowance balances both performance and economical value for the growing feet, so you get most out of the transitional pair. Our suggestion is always to go for a cheaper boot and stick to the size guideline, rather than going for a larger and moreexpensive set with the hopes of having them last for longer. Read our sizing discussion if you are unsure of the reason.

To quickly identify if your child needs to increase in boot size, take the insoles out.

If the insoles look like ones in the left picture then you just need the Skates widened. It is common for children’s feet to widen and grow a taller arch, SkatersEdge offer free widening for all Skates purchased from us.

If the insole looks like ones in the picture on the right AND the Skater is complaining about the Skates being too small, you need to increase the size.

Note that this way of checking size does not apply to Skaters who hasn’t been wearing their pair of Skates for a long period (eg. Over 2 months break between seasons). The footprint will not be credible if there is not enough Ice time on the Skates. It also does not apply to second hand Skates as you are probably seeing the previous owner’s foot print. It is always best to buy new insoles if you are buying second hand Skates.

If you decide to increase in boot size, you should maximize boot performance by increasing size by 5mm at a time or 10mm if the child is growing quite quickly.

For growing kids, it is recommended to purchase our Remote Fitting Tool Kit, this is also the tool we use to size skaters.
